PROOFREADING AND EDITING SERVICES
Proofreading and editing services are two different ways of making a piece of writing better. Proofreading, sometimes called proofing, concentrates on the surface writing with a particular emphasis on grammar, punctuation, and grammar and goes well beyond a spellchecker or grammar program. Editing examines the big picture and concentrates on flow, clarity, and content. It requires someone with specialized skills and goes well beyond an online course to learn about the elements of style.
The proofreading service I provide begins with the client discussing their needs via the contact form, followed by a real-time chat via whatever media the client requires. After discovering what the needs are, I begin the process of proofreading and the client and I go back and forth until they are satisfied.
The editing service that I provide also begins with the needs and desires expressed in the contact form. An editing service tends to involve a much-longer text and it requires more time for me to work on the text. As a former tenured Full Professor, I examine texts that typically include scholarly articles and conference papers, book chapters, and graduate theses and dissertations. As a certified coach, I occasionally mentor the client through the process of academic writing; however, the major strength is in the editing services I provide. I am familiar and adept at using the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) (18th ed.) as an overarching style guide and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) (7th ed.), the Modern Language Association Handbook (MLA)(9th ed.), and the Council of Science Educators Manual (CSE) (9th ed.) for more-specific style guides.
Proofreading services are billed at 42.00 + GST; editing is dependent on the client and can be billed at 50.00 + GST per hour or a negotiated fee for the job.
